Katie is a 20 year old student from Athlone, Co. Westmeath, currently studying Dietetics in Queen Margaret’s University, Edinburgh. Although she did not go on to pursue fashion and design at 3rd level, it remains to play a huge part in her life. Katie is currently signed with Catwalk Modelling agency in Galway – working with some of the top Irish stylists, designers, bloggers and hair and makeup artists.
She competed in the 2012 Irish Junk Kouture competition, where she modelled and designed her dress ‘Rejuicing is Appealing’ along with her two friends Emily Henshaw and Anna Keegan. Their design which was entirely made from orange peel skins was awarded the Western Regional Title, and they even got to showcase it on RTE’s Late Late Show. Katie was also lucky enough to win the Bank of Ireland Glamour Prize, which gave her the opportunity to attend and walk the ‘green carpet’ at the Royal Film Premiere of the Hobbit in London. It was a once in a life time experience for Katie and she got to meet the likes of Sir Ian Mc Kellen, Martin Freeman and even the Duke of Cambridge Prince William.
Katie believes that her success in Junk Kouture was not just down to her and her teammate’s hard work and dedication but also due to the amazing support from their school Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone, and of course their amazing art teacher Oonagh Kelly.
Katie says, ‘My Junk Kouture experience was nothing short of amazing. It was the highlight of my transition year, and I would strongly encourage students across Scotland to get involved.’
